As a neurodivergent person the simplest of tasks can feel overwhelming and can lead to serious procrastination. Take having a shower and leaving the house to visit a friend for example.
This week I needed to have a shower (yes I really NEEDED to), change my clothes before driving to my friend's house who lives 35-40 minutes away.
ADHD brain- you don't have enough time to shower and get there for the agreed time, you don't know what to wear afterwards. This lead to feelings of overwhelm, my brain feeling stuck and me not feeling able to move from the chair I was sitting in.
ADHD brain hack- break task down into chunks and do the first task only. Don't think, just do.
First task- turn the shower on.
Result- This released dopamine and allowed me to have a shower. When I came out of the shower I naturally found clothes as I have done thousands of times before and was able to leave.
ADHD brain start again- argh but 35-40 minutes drive is so long and boring it feels intolerable.
ADHD brain hack- Don't think, just do. I turned on a high energy Spotify playlist and blasted some tunes.
Result- Time flew and I was sooo glad I was able to overcome my ADHD executive functioning difficulty.
